Torqeedo takes home Innovation Award in Miami
The Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show Innovation Awards recognize “exceptionally groundbreaking new consumer marine products.” They are presented each year at the show’s Innovation Breakfast, presented by West Marine and the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF).
In total there were 18 awarded categories, but of course at Plugboats we are interested in the Electric Motor/ Battery Powered Propulsion/Hybrids. The winner was the Deep Blue 100i, from Torqeedo.
In presenting the ward, Judge Pat Rains said “Torqeedo keeps turning up the juice with electric propulsion for two new target markets – one for large torque needs as well as one for high speed applications like tow boats.”
In November Torqeedo announced big power increases in their electric motors and had their full line on display in Miami including the Deep Blue 100i and two new 100 kW inboard motors premiering in Miami.
They also showcased the new Deep Blue 40 kWh battery with technology by BMW i with 30% more capacity in the same footprint and an energy density of 144 Wh per kg. This is also part of the 24 V lithium-ion batteries which can deliver up to 3,500 Wh of power for electric boating or house loads.
In addition to the Torqeedo booth, their motors were presented in boats by the Canadian Electric Boat Company, Nova Luxe, Beneteau and Greenline Yachts.
The Canadian Electric Boat Volt 180 is driven by Torqeedo’s Deep Blue 50kW outboard while the Nova Luxe uses a 10.0 outboard in the electric tender for its Aquila 44. The Torqeedo Cruise is Beneteau’s choice for the two new sailboats it has on display at the show: the First 18 and the First 27. Greenline Yachts, a world leader in using hybrid systems, has added two yachts that are available with 100% electric propulsion, the Greenline 39 and the Greenline NEO.
