Electric boat awards named to honour French Inventor

The awards were created to recognize the inventors, designers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs and visionaries who are making advances every day to develop clean, quiet, zero emission technologies and designs to reduce reliance on fossil fuel for marine propulsion.

woodcut of Gustave Trouvé boat 'Le Telephone' ‘The Gussies’ are named to honour Gustave Trouvé, a prolific French inventor with over 75 patents – among them the world’s first outboard boat motor, which he devised so that he could detach the motor from his prototype electric boat ‘Le Teléphone’ and take it home for further work in his Paris apartment.

In 2020  there were 50 boats nominated from 19 countries…in 2021 there were 105 boats entered from 24 countries and there is every reason to believe even more will be entered this year.

The 11 Gussies Winners thus far represent 11 different countries: Austria, Bangladesh, Brazil, France, India, Italy, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Switzerland and the USA.

Because of the pandemic, the first Gussies were decided totally on public voting. Last year we introduced an International Judging Panel of experts from national electric boat associations and other e-boat organizations. The weighting of the votes was 80% public vote, 20% panel.

In those years, there were two rounds of public voting – one to select the Finalists in each category and another to select the eventual winners. For this year, all of the past Gussies winners will join the international judging panel, to make a total of 19 experts from around the world.

International Judging Panel

The Panel will vote to select which electric boats become Finalists, and then the public will vote. The Panel will also vote in the finals, with a weighting of 60% panel members, 40% public voted.

For the mathematically inclined, here is a simple analysis of how that works:

Assumption: 1000 public votes in the category. Those 1000 votes represent 40% of the total ‘points’, so the total number of points works out to 2500. The total Judges votes will account for 1500 points (1000 is 40% of 2500, 1500 is 60% of 2500). There are 11 judges, so each vote from a judge represents 227 points. Judges are recused from voting for boats from their own company.

The past winners on the Panel are: Cantiere Ernesto Riva, ecomarine, Freepower Solar Boat, Lamarca Engenharia, Maid of the Mist, ABB, Navalt, Silent-Yachts, Swiss Sustainable Yachts, Sunreef Yachts, ZEN Yachts and Zodiac Nautic.

The electric boat associations of the UK, France, USA, Greece, Switzerland and Canada are joined by the Venice 2028 organization and Germany’s Friends of the Finow Canal.

One of the refreshing things about The Gussies is that it reflects the competitive camaraderie in the electric boat industry. The judges appreciate the role of rewarding excellence as everyone pushes themselves and others to promote zero emission boating and literally help change the world.

A big thank you and shout out to all the Judges.

Finalists Judging took place the week of October 3, 2022.
Public Voting Begins October 11 and ends November 7.

Winners will be announced November 11.
