Guide to METSTRADE 2022 Electric Boat Exhibitors
The annual METSTRADE exhibition for the boating trade begins today (November 15) in Amsterdam, and here is Plugboats’ usual Guide to Electric Boat Exhibitors
The METSTRADE Show was launched in 1988 and is the world’s largest trade exhibition of marine equipment, materials and systems. In addition to products for the marine leisure industry there are also specialist pavilions for Superyachts, Marinas and Yards and Construction materials.
We did this METSTRADE guide in 2019 and 2021 (not in 2020 for obvious reasons). The number of electric boat exhibitors increases every year and they can be seen in each of those pavilions as well as in the main hall at the RAI Centre.
Here is a brief look at some of the new and notable e-boat companies. The tiled directory at the bottom of the page lists all of the electrical boat and associated exhibitors, and for those visiting the show in person, you may want to also reference the METSTRADE online directory of exhibitors to find out locations of each company’s booth.

RAD Propulsion
RAD Propulsion is launching their RAD 40 electric propulsion system at METSTRADE. It is designed for use in RIBs and powerboats, offering 40kW of continuous power. The most immediately striking feature of the RAD 40 is the compact design, in which the motor remains behind the transom when tilted and doesn’t intrude onto the vessel’s deck space. The outboard has fully integrated drive-by-wire throttle and electric steering through a full 180°, with 400 Volt architecture that has been designed from the outset for fast charging capabilities.
Evoy
Evoy is partnering with Tideman Boats to show off their Evoy Breeze 120+ hp electric outboard coupled with the Tideman RBB 700 EOB. (The boat was one of the Finalists in The Gussies for Electric Workboats.) The RBB 700 EOB is a fully recyclable high-speed HDPE (High-density polyethylene) workboat that can reach a top speed of 35 knots with the Evoy. Interested parties can contact Evoy at their stand in Hall 1 to enquire about a sea trial.
Propel
Propel has completed the development and testing of its SI electric outboard, a bespoke version of the Saietta Group’s proprietary axial flux ‘pancake’ AFT140i electric motor. Series production is all lined up to start in Q1 2023 at a new assembly line at Saietta Group’s facility in The Netherlands. Motors can be ordered now for delivery for the 2023 boating season. The S1 joins the company’s D1 inboard electric motor that has been on sale since the summer of 2022, as well as its new B1 modular ‘suitcase’ battery solution.
Green Waves
Norwegian boat manufacturer Green Waves is launching their new powertrain series: First Wave X. The system is built for professional use in salt or fresh water and is designed to be easy to install in both new and existing boats.The motor is available in 4-8kW models, both using 48V systems. First Wave X comes with charger and is available with li-ion battery packs ranging from 5 kiloWatt hours to 20 kWh. All components are IP65 standard. An optional phone application is available that enables the user to share boat access, manage, and control charging and receive push notifications regarding the powertrain status.
ZeroJet
ZeroJet is coming to Amsterdam all the way from New Zealand to introduce the European (and worldwide) market to their electric jet tender. The tenders are available in four sizes and are equipped with the company’s proprietary 14kW (≈20HP) electric jet motors and 48V ‘safe-to-touch’ electric system with 5kW battery pack. The boat and electric jet package were designed from scratch as a completely integrated unit to provide an extremely lightweight tender where the electric motor and jet pump weigh 50% less than a combustion outboard.
VoltSafe
Another company travelling a long distance is VoltSafe, coming from Canada (Montreal-based Vision Marine Technologies is also at the show.) VoltSafe has developed the world’s first high-voltage prongless plug, which uses using magnets and an ‘electrical fingerprint’ to connect to electricity. A key safety advantage is that the VoltSafe system eliminates the possibility of arcing and incorporates this with a smart system that monitors the electricity use and enables a list of future capabilities directly from the plug face like: data communication, AC or DC power and device load classification.
DAME Award nominees (and winners)
The DAME Design Awards was launched in 1991 to promote design in all disciplines and to recognize the best-designed products at the METSTRADE Show. One of the first electric propulsion winners was Oceanvolt in 2017 for its ServoProp hydrogenerating system.
Last year, the BLUSPIN system from France’s BLUENAV won the Innovation Award Product Category for its retractable electric propulsion system which can be integrated with a fossil fuel boat without any structure modifications. The resulting hybrid propulsion system enables the user to easily and instantly switch between fossil fuel and electric propulsion .
The Remigo electric outboard was also awarded Special Mention in 2021 for the category Machinery, Propulsion, Mechanical and Electrical Systems and Fittings.
Each year the organisers of METSTRADE donate the combined registration fees for the DAME Design Award to a selected charity as a way of giving back to society. For 2022 the METSTRADE Exhibition Committee selected World Sailing Trust as the beneficiary. The organisation promotes and enhance sailing in all its forms and works to protect the waters the sport depends on.
Electric propulsion is one of the technologies that also helps protect those waters. This year, there are a number of electric boat products and services nominated for the DAME Awards. Good luck to all!
Aqua superPower
The nomination for marine fast charge network Aqua superPower highlights the impact of the company on the marine sector’s transition to electric propulsion. Aqua announced the roll-out of the world’s first dedicated global marine fast charging network in 2021. A year later the network has become a reality with the creation of regional and local charging corridors in key boating destinations in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, the UK, the US, and the Nordics. Aqua superPower is developing an all-electric and integrated global ecosystem of marine superchargers to measurably reduce the impact of boating on the marine environment.
ePropulsion
ePropulsion, well known for its range of electric outboard and pod motors, introduced its first electric inboard, the H-100, in June and has followed that up with the I-Series of 10kW, 20kW and 40kW inboards. The I-20 is nominated in the DAME Awards for its innovative technology, smart features and human operation design. All motors in the I-Series incorporate the modular ePropulsion Smart System Architecture and the built-in IoT Connectivity Service.
Essential battery system by Aceleron
The Essential by Aceleron addresses a rapidly growing concern about end-of-life disposal in a world heading for batteries with everything. The Essential is a cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate battery with replaceable and upgradeable parts using compression rather than welded assembly to enable servicing in the field. This means that a faulty cell no longer requires the replacement of the whole battery. Returned parts are redistributed for use in other products or remanufactured for second life use. The Essential is available in 12, 24 and 48V configurations with up to 200 amps peak power.
PowerUP
PowerUP is an Estonian company with more than 15 years of experience with fuel cell technology. Their UP series of fuel cell generators are designed to provide green electric power for boat electronics and can also be used as a range extender to charge batteries in small electric propulsion systems. They come with power capabilities of 200W, 400W and 1 kiloWatt (1,000 watts). Irina Gracheva, a competitive Russian Sailor, won France’s Marie Agnès Péron (MAP) trophy using solar panels and an UP400 as the onboard power source for her Proto Mini Class sailboat.
