Plugboats Guide to Electric Boat Exhibitors: METSTRADE 2023
This year marks the 35th anniversary of METSTRADE Show, the world’s largest trade exhibition of marine equipment, materials and systems and the leading platform for professionals in the leisure marine equipment industry.
I don’t know how many electric boat exhibitors were at that first show in 1988, but I am going to assume that it would have been next to zero. In the past few years, though, the number of exhibitors specializing in electric motors, batteries and accessories has more than tripled from 25 in 2019 to 77 at this year’s show.
That’s not all, there is now a dedicated Next Generation Propulsion Zone with 19 exhibitors as well as Q&A presentations and seminars in the show’s METSTRADE Theatre – and we can say with absolute certainty that an electric propulsion system will be the winner of the Propulsion & Dynamics category in the prestigious DAME Design Awards.
Winner of DAME propulsion award will be electric
The reason we can be so sure is because there are no fossil fuel nominees: every nominee in the category is an electric solution: ePropulsion, FinX, Garmin, Molabo, Oceanvolt, Temo, Torqeedo and ZeroJet. Also, in the Electronic & Electric Systems, Denmark’s EPTechnologies is a nominee for its new HSS Solid State Battery.
The other prestigious awards are the Boat Builder Awards, presented by IBI and METSTRADE in association with Raymarine. Electric boats and builders are nominated in seven of the eleven categories.
There are also two Pavilions that are not totally focussed on electric boats and boating, but have non-fossil fuel propulsion as major parts of their presentations.
Exhibits, Seminars, Round Tables
The Foiling Technology Pavilion will look at the present and future of hydrofoiling and includes electric innovators BAR Technologies, Edorado, Neocean and the Emirates Team New Zealand Design Works that developed a hydrogen chase boat for the 2024 America’s Cup.
The Start Up Pavilion has a large collection of new companies that include BatteryCheck, with a system that provides continuous monitoring and predictive analytics for safe battery operation and optimization; and Open Waters Solar, who have designed composite solar panels that they claim are stronger, lighter and more durable than any other panels.

DAME Design Awards
The DAME Design Awards are now in their 32nd year of recognizing and rewarding the importance of design in engaging boat buyers. It celebrates design in all its forms, including styling, functionality, innovation, ease of use, and packaging.
Any new marine equipment product placed onto the market for sale after 1 September 2022 and until 15 November 2023 is eligible, with the criteria that it needs to be ready for production and orders must be possible to accept at the 2023 METSTRADE Show.
Each entrant submits a €150 fee, which goes to a charity, this year that is The Magenta Project, a passionate collective working towards greater equity and inclusion in sailing, with a focus on gender.
The Nominees are selected from the entrants by a Jury drawn from a mix of experts in the marine and broader industries. It typically includes those with naval architecture, boat design, interior design, user application and marine market experience and skills.
Members of the Jury carefully assess entries for overall design, build quality, functionality, and use of materials. Other factors taken into account are originality, ergonomics, and price/quality ratio.
For the 2023 Awards, 53 products from 19 countries across four continents have been nominated to enter the final rounds of judgement. In addition, the Awards have increased the emphasis on environmental design as a criteria, so if the Jury finds an exemplary product that is well designed and has clear and obvious merit it may announce an Environmental Design Winner.

ePropulsion X20 electric outboard motor

FinX Fin5 propellerless finned electric motor
FinX is developing a new nautical propulsion for boats, with fins. This propulsion, which replaces the propeller by an undulating membrane, is bio-inspired and made in France. The Fin5 is the first finned boat motor, without propeller, 100% electric and safe, 2kW (equivalent in thrust to a 5 HP engine). It is dedicated to small boats (boats and dinghies) and sailboats up to 3 tons.

Molabo ARIES i50

Oceanvolt HighPower ServoProp 25
The HighPower ServoProp 25 (HPSP25), is a 25kW electric saildrive equipped with a controllable pitch propeller. It also serves as a powerful hydrogenerator on 45-70ft sailboats and is capable of hydrogenerating 5kW at 10 knots. The compact and installation friendly design includes an integrated motor controller and liquid cooling system. The system is fed from a safe, low voltage 48V battery pack.
Temo 1000 electric outboard

The Boat Builder Awards
The Boat Builder Awards (BBA), jointly run by IBI and METSTRADE in association with Raymarine, take place Thursday, November 16 at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam.
The awards recognize the significant contributions of individuals, teams and supply chain partners within boat building companies globally.
METSTRADE director Niels Klarenbeek says “The BBA provide an essential focal point for the thousands of METSTRADE visitors who work for the global yacht construction industry and allied trades, as well as those who supply the equipment and materials for them. This year’s strong field of entries from four continents reflects the truly international standing of the Boat Builder Awards.”
The electric Icon from TYDE, which was launched earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival obviously made an impression on the Jury and is on the Shortlist in four categories. TYDE was started by Torqeedo founder Christoph Ballin and tech entrepreneur Tobias Hoffritz. The Icon is their first project and is the result of collaboration between a range of mobility experts including Ballin, Hoffritz and Designworks, a BMW Group subsidiary with studios in Los Angeles, Munich and Shanghai.

The other multiple nominee is Rand Boats, who are nominated in the Customer of Tomorrow category for their shared boat ownership platform GoBoat Connect. Founder Carl Kai Rand is also nominated in the Category of the Year category (along with the Icon crew.)
