Guide to Electric Boat Exhibitors: Salone Nautico Venezia 2023

As with every boat show, the number of electric boat exhibitors at the Venice Boat Show (Salone Nautica Venezia) continues to grow each year as more manufacturers and boating services discover the benefits and advantages of fossil free time on the water. Salone officials say that this year there will be 50 boats, up 30% from 2022.

Read about last year’s Salone Nautico Venezia

Considering that Venice is a city built on canals that was once the insurmountable centre of maritime power, it is surprising that it has not been a premier boat show location in modern times. The Salone Nautica was launched only in 2019 and its second event was cancelled during the first throes of the COVID-19 pandemic.

E-Regatta and Green Parade of electric boat exhibitors

In 2021 and 2022 it hosted E-Regatta, a competition between electric boat entries judged on their capabilities in small space handling, long term endurance and straight run speed. The E-Regatta committee also created the Green Parade, in which all electric boats at the show travel from St. Mark’s Cathedral, along the Grand Canal and Canareggio, finishing at the Arsenale, home of Venetian ship building for three centuries – and of the Boat Show from May 31 to June 4.Venice e-Regatta - electric boats going past St. Mark's Square

This year the Green Parade takes place in the late afternoon of June 1. The e-Regatta itself will take place in the same areas as in 2022: the Slalom and e-Ballerina events showcasing boat manoeuvring and pilot abilities will be held in the Grand Darden (large dock) of the Arsenale on June 1 at 10:00. The speed event will be held on the waters alongside the former seaplane airport – the Idroscalo – at 11:00 and 18:00 on June 2.

Conference and MUVE Project

On opening day (May 31) between 14:00 and 17:00, a conference will be held at the Arsenale with the theme: “Yachting and sustainability, from production to the sea.” Among the speakers will be Gianluca Cuzzolin, COO of the Waterborne Mobility System at AVM/Actv (Venice’s public transport provider), Gianfranco Fenocchio, General Manager Bosch Engineering, Norberto Barlocco, Director of Engineering, Siemens Energy, Marco Santucci, CEO, Jaguar & Land Rover Italy, Federico Lantero, Head of Product Design, Gruppo Azimut Benetti, Gianluca Ciniero, Head of Engineering, CRN Yachts Gruppo Ferretti and Barbara Amerio, CEO Sustainability Director, Amer Yachts.

At the same time, the winner of the MUVE Yacht Project will be announced in another section of the Arsenale, the Modelli Room. MUVE is the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, responsible for 11 of Venice’s most famous and revered museums, like the Doge’s Palace, the Murano Glass Museum and the Naval History Museum. Since 2019 it has sponsored competitions for best designs in different facets of sustainable water transport. This year’s award will be presented to the best “Concept for the design and management of the life cycle of rental and charter units.”

‘Biennalle of Sustainability’

The Venice Biennale Foundation, which organizes the city’s biannual festival sometimes called ‘the Olympics of the art world’, announced that the 2023 exhibition (which started last week and runs to November) would also be the first ‘Biennale of Sustainability’.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro enthused that “the synergy between these two events should serve as a clear sign of the efforts we are dedicating to this end. For all who enter the Arsenal, the Boat Show brings boats, motors, charging stations and experts who will address this important challenge”.

Salone Nautico Venezia: Some selected electric boat exhibitors

The full list of al electric boat exhibitors follows.

Blue Nav/AS Labruna

Photo of BlueNav electric boat exhibitor hybrid systemIn an international collaboration, BlueNav of France and Italian distributor AS Labruna are excited to officially announce their cooperation welcome visitors aboard demonstration boat ‘Spirit of BlueNav’ and answer any questions. BlueNav has an innovative technology that enables fossil fuel boats to easily – and economically – convert to a hybrid system.

The retractable BlueNav electric motors can be mounted to the hull with no structural changes and are controlled from the helm so the vessel can switch from diesel (or gas) propulsion for high speeds to electric motors for lower speeds and/or harbour navigation.

Aqua superPower

Bitta post for charging electric boat exhibitors at Venice Boat ShowMarine fast charging network Aqua superPower is the Show’s Technical Partner for the second consecutive year. The e-Village of electric boats will showcase Aqua’s ‘Bitta’ charging post, which encases a 22 kW AC charger within a post that pays homage to the classic ‘palina’ wooden mooring posts that have dotted the canals of Venice for centuries.

In addition to providing general charging for all of the electric exhibitors at the Show, Aqua will also be supporting the high-performance electric boats of the e-Regatta speed races with its Aqua 75 DC fast charging station.

Pegasus

Pegasus P50 sailboat with electric Oveanvolt motorsPegasus Yachts is showcasing their Pegasus 50 at the Salone, which was a Gussies Finalist for Electric Sailboats last year. This is very similar to the boat that Markus Moser sailed to victory in the gruelling OSTAR race (Original Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race) last year. That boat, Lifgun, had modifications for single-handed use and some extra items to make things a bit more comfortable when sailing a few hundred miles north of where the Titanic hit the iceberg! The P50 Globe Electric is a majestic vessel inside and out and has two 15kW Oceanvolt ServoProp hydrogenerating motors with a 38.5 kWh, 48 VDC battery bank.

freepower

freepower solar boat - Escape versionThe freepower solar boat was the winner of ‘In Development’ category for boats up to 8 metres/26 ft in the 2021 Gussies International Electric Boat Awards. The boat is now ready for order and creator Martin Bjurmalm has detailed the fittings and requirements for three versions of the boat: The Utility is designed as a no-frills work boat, The Coast steps it up a notch with touches like EVA foam on deck and Flexiteek on tabletops, while The Escape features all of that plus a wide bathing platform at the stern and dramatic LED lighting thoughout.

All models have a 5-7.5kW Seadrive motor, battery capacity of up to 18 kWh and solar-panelled roof that can deliver 1.6kW peak. The hull’s hydrodynamic profile is energy optimized for electric operation and displacement speed, all with the intent of maximizing the distance one can sail on the sun’s energy.

Rand

Rand Breeze 20 electric boatDenmark’s Rand boats were at last year’s Salone, and have just introduced the Breeze 20, which may not be specifically designed for the waterways of Venice, but is designed for navigating inland lakes, rivers, and the harbours, and canals of any city. With a length of 20 feet (6m) and width of 6′ 10″ (2.1m), the Breeze hull weighs in at a remarkably low 1,300 lbs (595kg). A Torqeedo Cruise motor and battery package allow it to sail for up to 20 hours at an average speed of 4 knots, with a top speed of 10 knots.

Aside from having all the advantages of being electric, the Breeze has all the details that make it just a plain great socializing boat. With room for 8 passengers, it has a central picnic table which transform into a spacious sunbed and there are storage areas with dedicated room for the anchor, extra cushions, fenders, and other equipment so passengers can move about freely at all time.

Greenline

Greenline Yachts have been exhibitors at the Salone Nautico Venezia every year. For those looking for electric propulsion in a larger yacht with sleeping quarters, galley and all the amenities of home, Greenline pioneered the category beginning in 2008. Their models, which range from 39 to 60 feet, are known for their unique semi-displacement hulls which allow for long range cruising in luxe surroundings.

Every model in the line is available with all-electric propulsion or hybrid propulsion combining diesel and electric drives. Solar panels add to the energy mix on all models, and the company also pays attention to the environment beyond the emissions aspects with elements like eco-friendly PET foam core, grass paper and recycled materials.

Lampuga

At the other end of the size scale from Greenline is Lampuga electric surfboards. The company has two models, the Air and the Rescue. The Air is an inflatable board, the Rescue is a standard rigid format. Both are powered by 10 kW electric motors hooked up to a jet propulsion system that can provide speeds of up to 50 kmh (30 mph). This is all backed with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 3.6 kWh, meaning up to an hour of riding (at less audacious speeds!)

The boards are controlled by a hand-held remote that is tethered to the board for riding stability – but the actual electronic connection is done via Bluetooth.

AQA Venice

If you’re looking to test drive an electric boat, than of course the Boat Show is a great place for it. If you are visiting Venice at another time of year you can still get the quiet electric experience while cruising the canals of La Serenissima through boat rental company AQA, who are exhibiting at the show.

AQA has two Rand boats available for rental: The Picnic 18 and the Mana 23. You can choose to just ply the canals as you wish, or take one of their experience cruises. On the Smart Cruise you’ll be taken by many well known landmarks, while the Hidden Canals cruise will take you to secret canals not known to most tourists.

Our Electric Boats

We have always believed that the future will be full of electric motors, both in boats and in cars, but we were born in Venice and therefore we have focused on the sea route, or to stay closer in the lagoon.

Our conviction regarding electric boats was so deeply rooted that since 2005 the adventure started with an epic journey: The circumnavigation of Italy, the “IMES” boat set sail from Venice, has always reached Genoa only by the power of the sun. If then it was possible to reach this much, today technology has made giant steps:

Nothing is missing to confirm that ours was not an illusion, now it is a certainty.

Huracan S.r.l. was founded at the beginning of 2012 in Venice. Since then its goal has been that of building entirely electric marine motors, non polluting, highly performative and more reliable than those already on the market. The motors had to live up to their name which is that of a Mayan deity, the lord of storms and lightning: Huracan. Born to protect and value fragile and unique environments such as the Venetian lagoon, all

Huracan motors can be used in places where combustion motors are prohibited. Huracan is the realization of a dream that its founders have shared: permanently eliminating polluting propulsions from Venice and its lagoon. This is no easy task: Venice welcomes hundreds of thousands of people and its transport necessities are those of a very big city.

Our corporate policy is to take great pains over building boats that enhance the relationship between boats, people and the environment. We have a vision; the increased freedom of people to move at will across the sea shall not be achieved at the expense of the environment.

We started our electric ambition already in 2009 and have had an electric powertrain as an option for three of our boat models since 2015.

Our E-power Concept, also known as “Environmental Power”, represents Nimbus environmental thinking for the future, in which we include the entire boat-building process from production engineering to climate-smart materials.
