While the company is perhaps best known for its Fantail line of classic electric cruising salon boats, it also has made news in the speed department, when its Volt 180 set a record for electric boats at the famous Lake of the Ozarks Shootout last August.

The Phoenix is a ten seat open boat with twin Torqeedo Deep Blue 50Rs, the most powerful of the German company’s electric outboards. Each motor has propulsive power that equates to an 80 HP gas motor with electricity supplied by 40 kWh BMWi lithium-ion batteries (80kWh total). A Glendenning ProPilot joystick control system controls throttles and steering independently for each motor.

Canadian Electric Boat has both sales and rentals

The CEBC is one of the few companies in the electric boat industry that ‘has something for everybody’.

In addition to the Phoenix, they offer four models:

The Quietude 156, a 15’6″ (4.7m) cruising boat powered by a retractable MinnKota motor. It is a smaller version of the classic canopied electric saloon boat, but built for four passengers.

The Fantail is the full sized classic, built for 8-10 passengers, with a length of  21’7″ (6.6 m) and 6’8″ (2.03 m) beam. It can be ordered with a MinnKota with lead acid batteries or a Torqeedo 4.0 Cruise motor and  li-ion powerpack.

Moving out of the Sunday afternoon cruisers, the Bruce 22 electric runabout is named after famous naval architect Ian Bruce, creator of the laser boat and the design was inspired by the classic 1947 Chris-Craft. The Bruce is available  comes in a variety of styles and motor options.

The Piktronic is a 100kW (peak output) motor and can take the Bruce up to speeds of 36 knots (65.9 kmh /41 mph). (The Open Utility and BruceT both seat 8 passengers, while the Hatchback seats 5 with a mahogany deck covering the aft seating area.)

The Volt 180 that set the Lake of the Ozarks records is an open sport boat with an efficient low-draft planning hull designed to work with outboards ranging anywhere from the MinnKota 2.0 to the Torqeedo Cruise 4 and Cruise 10 up to a single Torqeedo Deep Blue 50R.

Rentals in 5 countries on 3 continents

Canadian Electric Boat is not alone as a manufacturer in offering their boats as rentals or being associated with rental companies, but they probably have the most geographically widespread network of associated companies.

In Canada boats can be rented in the company’s home town of Montreal, and in the United States they are available at the electric saloon boat capital of the world – Newport Beach, California.

The Lake District in the United Kingdom has CEBC boats for rent, and the company participated in a fundraiser for breast cancer research last year with a customized pink model.

Moving across the Channel they can be found at Tagus Marina in Lisbon, Portugal and even further afield you can rent an electric boat made from Montreal, Canada at the On A Boat outlet in Melbourne, Australia – 16,726 kilometres away.

Exciting things are happening every day in electric boats and boating.
