RemigoOne electric outboard wins EU’s DesignEuropa Awards
Original Article Published August 25, 2023: The stylish RemigoOne electric outboard continues to gather acclaim and has been named a finalist in the prestigious DesignEuropaAwards, presented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). It is the only product from the marine industry to reach the finals.

RemigoOne was crowned the winner in the Small and Emerging Companies category, impressing the jury with its compact and user-friendly design, zero-emission motor and the innovative technology behind the product.
Remigo is no stranger to awards for its design. Almost immediately after its debut it received a special mention at the 2021 METSTRADE Design Awards. It then earned the Made in Slovenia Mark of Excellence for that country’s Centre for Creativity, and most recently received an international Green Product Award honouring products and services that stand out in terms of design, innovation and sustainability.
Multiple honours for RemigoOne electric outboard
As Plugboats wrote about the RemigoOne when it was first launched, the outboard was ‘designed from the water on up’. Company Founder and CEO Marko Vrtovec and his team interviewed dozens of sailboat and small dinghy owners about what they were looking for in an outboard, then leveraged the benefits of electric propulsion to create an ultra modern design with some unique features.
The aluminum shaft encases the battery (similar to many e-bikes), with push button controls on top and an ingenious system invented by Remigo Team where the tiller doubles as a carrying handle, and the motor is easily attached and removed from its transom bracket with a simple pin system.
The shaft is also shaped like a rudder to aid with the handling and steering of the boat.
Vtrovec said “We built, tested, and improved numerous prototypes along the way, rethinking every aspect of the product many times over before introducing it to the public.”
The 1,000 watt brushless DC motor delivers 30 kg/ 67 lbs of thrust – similar to a 3 hp ICE motors, and had a 1085 watt hour Li-ion battery. The motor, integrated battery and bracket system weighs 14.5 kg ( 32 lbs ) total.
The Remigo team includes industrial designer Ajda Bertok and Tjaš Cvek, chief of R&D, who said the final result reflects Remigo’s minimalist form-follows-function philosophy: “You know you are finished with designing when there is nothing else left to be removed.”
In the DesignEuropaAwards, over 700 works were submitted from 43 countries in a variety of categories. Remigo is one of four finalists in the ‘small and emerging companies’ category.
The Awards are organized by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to recognize and honour great products and designers in the field of industrial design.
The 12 person jury is headed by Isabelle Vérilhac, President of the Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA) and includes experts from all aspects of industrial design and intellectual property including practicing designers, lawyers, educators and Benedict Hobson, co-CEO of Dezeen magazine.
“We have always worked for our products to combine a superior user experience with sustainable and inclusive design.” Said Vrtovec. “This nomination means another recognition for the company and that we are on the right track.”
The winners will the DesignEuropaAwards will be announced on September 5th in Berlin.
