Voltari 260 electric boat goes Florida to Bahamas – 91 miles – on single charge

The Voltari 260 electric boat has accomplished quite a feat: Key Largo Florida to Bimini, Bahamas: 91 miles (146 km / 80 nm) across Gulf Stream waters on a single battery battery charge.

The Voltari 260 is a high performance all-electric boat with peak power of 550kW (≈700hp) and a 60 mile per hour top speed. For this trip, though, the goal was to show off the range, so it cruised along through the aquamarine Caribbean waters at an average speed of 5 mph.

The boat’s 142 kWh battery enabled the crew to make the journey without interruption  – marking the longest overseas distance without recharging of any kind that a performance electric boat has successfully completed.

Production, headquarters in Canada and US

VOLTARI Marine Electric is a Canadian corporation with manufacturing in Ontario, product and powertrain engineering and battery manufacturing in Montréal, Quebec and U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale.

There must be something about Canada and electric boats. Montreal company Vision Marine Technologies set the world speed record for electric boats last August with a top speed of 108 mph at the Lake of The Ozarks Shootout.

Voltari was born (check out their story in the video below) when former craft brewery owner Cam Heaps (CEO) and his partner, President Tim Markou, combined ultra-light carbon-fiber materials with high-performance hull designs and equipped them with power and propulsion systems from LTS Marine, a Canadian innovator in marine power technologies. Voltari now owns LTS and the company has combined years of development in materials, propulsion and design into one state-of-the-art performance EV boating experience.

“We are beyond proud of what we have accomplished as a team,” said Voltari founder Heaps. “We created the Voltari 260 to provide freedom to explore open waters on long run times and with the success of this trip, the team has witnessed firsthand the capabilities of our newest innovation in this rapidly emerging industry. The Bahamas crossing was the first step in proving to the world how we provide a thrilling boating experience with minimal impact to the environment and maximum enjoyment.”

“Not only did we set out to break records,” added Markou, “in the process of doing so, we set a tone for the true capabilities of the Voltari 260 and became more confident than ever in our technology.”
